Difference between static ip and dynamic ip

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. There are two main types of IP addresses: static and dynamic.

A static IP address is a fixed IP address that is manually assigned to a device. Once a static IP address is assigned to a device, it does not change, regardless of whether the device is turned off or disconnected from the network.

A dynamic IP address, on the other hand, is assigned to a device dynamically, typically by a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server. Dynamic IP addresses are assigned each time a device connects to a network, and they can change over time.

Here are some differences between Static IP and dynamic IP

  1. Persistence: Static IP addresses are persistent and do not change, whereas dynamic IP addresses are assigned each time a device connects to a network and can change over time.

  2. Manual or Automatic Configuration: Static IP addresses need to be manually configured, whereas dynamic IP addresses are automatically assigned by a DHCP server.

  3. Security: Having a static IP address can make a device more vulnerable to hacking, since attackers can easily target the device using its known IP address. With dynamic IP addresses, the IP address changes each time the device connects, making it more difficult for attackers to target.

  4. Easier to remember: Static IP addresses are usually easier to remember, and that's why it's preferred when setting up servers, security cameras, and other devices that require remote access.

  5. Cost: Static IP addresses often come with an additional cost, dynamic IP addresses are typically included in the standard cost of Internet service.

Overall, each type of IP address has its advantages and disadvantages. Dynamic IP addresses are more secure and easier to manage, but static IP addresses are more reliable and easier to remember. The choice of IP address type will often depend on the specific requirements of the network or device in question.
